Key Stage 2/3 Links

The music department at Callington Community College has important long term links with our partner primary schools.

Over the last decade primary schools have taken part a number of large scale music making projects initiated by the college. These include the Millennium 2000 Tango Tour project together with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the Music and Callington Murals Project in 2003, the Mike Mower Jazz Project in 2006 and more recently in July 2011 our secondary school musicians performed with local primary students from six separate cluster schools as part of our Right Ol' Song and Dance at Sterts Theatre, which again involved working with professional musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Links are further strengthened by the year 6 transition day in July, during which the music college runs a number of fun activities for future year 7 students to get involved with music making and performance.  There is also an annual meeting at the college in June, for all intake pupils who wish to take part in the peripatetic music instrument learning scheme when they come to the community college. Each year some 70 of our intake pupils have instrumental or singing lessons in Year 7.

There are meetings between primary music coordinators and college music staff to discuss new initiatives, plan annual music events and discuss curriculum matters. Callington music staff attend Primary Head teacher's meetings to feedback information on past pupils. There is a plan to involve primary aged pupils in future Saturday Morning Music School events at Callington CC.

A large number of primary school pupils take part in the annual non competitive Music Festival, now in its Twelfth Year, which takes place at the college each November.  Primary students are also able to get involved with the school's junior wind band rehearsals as part of the school's extra-curricular programme.

Callington Music College is currently working on a community singing project with local primary schools and KEAP, as part of the Sing to Success programme.  A performance is scheduled for the end of the summer term!
