This course is for all instrumentalist and vocalists, covering performance, composition, and the history and development of music.
The performance unit focusses mainly on the development of the student as a soloist, but also includes opportunities for group performance. The student learns how to rehearse effectively, how to perform increasingly demanding pieces, and how to evaluate and critique their own performances.
The compostition unit involves the creation of one major composition in any musical style. Through the process of composition the student encounters aspects of music theory, and learns how to analyse their own and others work in order to develop it effectively.
The development of music unit covers the whole of music history in the western classical tradition, music of other cultures and pop, rock and jazz styles, including elements of music technology. This unit is taught through teacher led delivery, student research, and practical exploration of the subject. The unit is assessed through the submission of student presentations.
Assessment for this course is through regular internal monitoring of student performances, compositions and written submissions, backed up by audio and video evidence. There is no final written exam.
Although this course is taught by curriculum music staff, students are advised that they need to maintain regular instrumental lessons for the duration of this course.
This course links directly into the A-Level Music, A-Level Music Technology, BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Music (Performing) and BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music (Performing) which are all taught at Sixth Form Level at Caliington.
